Sound Therapy

Aside from the previously mentioned podcast, I’ve been experimenting with a variety of audio solutions to sleeplessness. Some involve other podcasts specifically designed to lull the listener to sleep. Another method is background noise. I’ve been playing with an app called My Noises that simulates the sounds of, say, a thunderstorm or summer night or ocean waves. A couple favorites are also a little quirkier - the sound of being on a train, and a compilation of shortwave number stations.

It’s funny, back in art school, I would cherish trips home so that I might sleep in the total silence of a Western Mass winter night. At school, I lived across the street from a night club, never mind the usual city sounds. Background noise used to be the enemy. Now it’s a friend.

I guess while music can stir the creative mind, some dulcet sounds can calm it down.
